NUCCA is a gentle chiropractic method that focuses on balancing the entire spine by precisely correcting the position of the head and neck. NUCCA is an upper cervical based technique meaning we use the C-1 vertebrae (also known as the “Atlas”) as the point from which we make the correction. The NUCCA upper cervical technique uses a mathematical based analysis of x-rays to calculate exactly where spine has misaligned (subluxated) and use that analysis to calculate how to correct the problem and balance the head on top of the neck and balance the spine and hips as well. Upper cervical based care, and especially the NUCCA technique, are known for getting results where other methods have failed. The ability to relieve pain and help improve the quality of life for people who have suffered with symptoms for decades is what makes the NUCCA upper cervical method so popular among patients.

Research has shown the NUCCA upper-cervical technique to be powerful as well. To date it is the only chiropractic technique published by multiple peer reviewed medical journals for it’s ability to lower blood pressure by up to 14 points in a double-blind, placebo controlled study. NUCCA’s upper cervical approach is currently being researched for its ability to improve blood-flow in the head and neck.

Although you may never have heard of this unique health care approach, the NUCCA upper cervical technique has been featured on Good Morning America, Discovery Health Channel, and PBS Chicago Tonight. Similar upper cervical chiropractic techniques have been featured on The Doctors and Montel Williams.

Understanding Upper Cervical Subluxation

Understanding the NUCCA Approach

The premise behind the NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic technique can be explained very simply. Your body and particularly your head and neck are designed to be in just the right place. The reason for this is that even the slightest deviation from this “perfect” place causes the bones of the neck and skull to interfere with the proper function of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. This misalignment, also known as the Atlas Subluxation or C-1 subluxation, causes a cascade of health problems to both the structure and function of the body. In fact, we have seen the c-1 misalignment result in or contribute to around 150 different different conditions and symptoms in our patients. Issues ranging from sleep difficulties to asthma, and from acid reflux to severe pain and numbness. We have even helped people with kidney failure and diabetes as well as the more common headaches, migraines and sciatic pain.

People often ask “how can a misaligned neck result in some many problems?” The answer is simply that the c-1 misalignment affects the function of the brain and spinal cord-which in turn are in control of everything else that makes up your physical body. So in summary, when the misalignment affects the brain and spinal cord- various problems can arise because the function of all your body parts relies upon the proper function of the nerves that control those organs.

How Can It Happen?

It takes a physical trauma (or multiple small traumas over years) to create a C-1 subluxation. When accidents and injuries tear and damage the ligaments that hold the head and neck in place, the bones slide out of their proper position and if the misalignment is large enough, this movement insults/puts pressure on the brainstem (the junction between brain and spinal cord). This results in a neuromuscular imbalance that runs from the head down to the hips and legs. In fact, it is measuring this imbalance that tells the NUCCA doctor if you are out of alignment.

The physical trauma that causes the upper cervical subluxation can come from falls on the ice, sports injuries, running into other people, wrestling around as children, hitting your head when getting in a car or on furniture. It can also be caused at birth or from multiple small injuries over time. We estimate that around 30-40% of babies receive upper cervical subluxations in the birthing process, so we do recommend that parents get newborns checked soon after birth. There are countless ways to knock a spine out, but simply put, the NUCCA upper cervical method is the best procedure I know for correcting it. At Health and Stability Spinal Care we believe that education is a big part of our patients success. This entire website is dedicated to helping you understand the full scope of what our team can do.
